The popular privacy cryptocurrency, Zcash is getting ready for a major upgrade with the first release of network software which is compatible with its upcoming Sapling hard fork.

This was contained in a blog post by Sean Bowe, an engineer with the Zerocoin Electric Coin Company, the firm behind the Zcash coin. He announced that Zcash version 2.0.0 was released Thursday.

Users and miners urged to upgrade to the new version

He further added that the company is now urging users and miners to upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible.

The coin’s hard form is expected to take place on October 28. It will coincide with the first Sapling block mining at block 419,200. Before the live launch though, Bowe announced that next Thursday, Sapling will run on a test network (or testnet) from block 280,000.

He wrote:

Sapling had previously activated on testnet, but because changes were made to the consensus rules your node will automatically roll back and proceed on the Overwinter testnet branch until Sapling activates again at the new height.

The upgraded software version comes with experimental support for remote procedure calls. This makes it possible for code to be executed on a remote computer through the full support will only be available in the v.2.0.1 release.

The V.2.0 also fixes a bug that usually slowed down some nodes syncing to the network when banning peers. According to Bowe, this function was introduced to reduce a denial of service attacks originating from Sprout nodes.

The upgraded software has now been programmed to ignore invalid transactions.

Sapling set to reduce storage requirements for private transactions

One of the main aims of Sapling upgrade is so as to significantly reduce the storage requirements for private transactions and update the blockchain’s zk-snarks cryptography. This will make it an even more secure blockchain.

In his blog post, Bowe added that a two-part event to produce the parameters required to encrypt the blockchain took place on Tuesday. The team in another blog post announced after completing the process that it is the largest multi-party computations ever performed.

Earlier this year, the Zcash team started releasing software patches for Sapling. The cryptocurrency’s previous Overwinter hardfork took place in June. It was tagged as a trial run for sapling and had various software improvements.
