QuadrigaCX Unexpectedly Goes Down For Maintenance

1

Canadian bitcoin and cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX has unexpectedly taken down their website for maintenance just weeks after its owner has passed away.

Users of the exchange have recently reported difficulties withdrawing both fiat and cryptocurrency. The Canadian exchange’s website currently states:

Our site is down for maintenance. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. We appreciate your patience, and will keep you updated as we know more. Thank you.

The recently reported delays in combination with the owner’s death and the unexpected maintenance are concerning, especially given the choice of language in the maintenance note “[…] will keep you updated as we know more.”

Can this imply that the exchange was hacked? Or are they simply trying to catch up with their backlog of requests before processing any further requests? Let’s hope it’s the latter.

No help from customer service

One QuadrigaCX user reached out to XBT.net, explaining that their fiat withdrawal request was not processed for over a month. After reaching out to customer support, they received this ambiguous response:

After providing the requested information, the customer received this follow up email:

The user then followed up with the exchange after not hearing back for a few weeks to which the exchange answered:

Since then, the exchange hasn’t responded to any of the user’s emails and has not responded to any of XBT’s request for information.

Owner’s passing

During this time, the user also received a general email from the exchange explaining changes to its procedures as follows:

QuadrigaCX has not made any announcements on Twitter. We will keep monitoring the situation for updates.
