Norwegian news outlets are reporting that a young man was found murdered soon after completing an in-person bitcoin trade for cash. Local police are still investigating the crime scene and have no suspects yet.

Investigators are trying to piece together information about the brutal stabbing to death of the victim. However, not much is known as to what might have happened after the man successfully finalized a “cash-for-bitcoin” exchange.

TV 2, a Norwegian news organization, reports that the tragic incident occurred on Monday, likely in the morning hours between 7:50 am and 12:10 pm local time.

The victim is a 24-year-old who lived in the affluent neighborhood of Majorstuen in Oslo. Reports indicate that one of his roommates checked on him only to find him dead. He alerted the local police who confirmed the incident and secured the crime scene.

TV 2 has reported that Oslo police are aware that the deceased had undertaken a crypto trade in which he apparently exchanged Bitcoin for a considerable sum of money paid in cash. It is also being reported that several people close to him knew of his crypto connections.

Police sources also told the news outlet that officers are mapping the apartment to establish leads, noting that money must have been kept somewhere within the home.

According to Grete LIen Metlid, Oslo’s chief of police and who heads the Intelligence and Investigations department, investigators had received information that there could be a connection between the murder and the cash-for-bitcoin transaction.

He told TV 2:

“We are familiar with a tip about Bitcoin, but at this time we will not provide more information about the investigation.”

However, although the police chief did not provide any further details, he noted that officers were carrying out an extensive investigation to determine exactly what transpired.

Part of the police focus, therefore, would be to establish the link as “economic motives” forms one of the primary focus points in an investigation.

TV 2 states that there had been no arrests in the immediate aftermath of the killing, with the police so far not naming any suspects. Nevertheless, crime scene detectives and forensic experts are still investigating, the news site reported.

Metlid provided an update later on Wednesday in which he noted that the intelligence and investigative police unit was “going through video” to try and crack the murder.

There have been reports of kidnappings and robbery with violence related to bitcoin and crypto in the past. It raises the question of security and could be a cause for alarm to the law enforcement agencies.
