Apple Abruptly Delists Popular Crypto Podcast ‘Off the Chain’ For Nearly 1 Week
Apple's iTunes Store has apparently removed a podcast hosted by cryptocurrency enthusiast and Bitcoin personality Anthony "Pomp" Pompliano.
Apple’s iTunes Store has apparently removed a podcast hosted by cryptocurrency enthusiast and Bitcoin personality Anthony “Pomp” Pompliano.
The “Off the Chain” podcast had reportedly surged in popularity following an episode about the importance of Bitcoin. It climbed into the fourth spot in the ‘Investing’ section of the app before being taken down.
Pomp, a partner at Morgan Creek Digital, said in a tweet that the podcast “mysteriously” disappeared from the U.S iTunes store on November 5.
Clearly unhappy at the development, Pompliano wrote that:
“Last week we released a podcast discussing the ultimate argument for Bitcoin. It exploded & ranked #4 in US investing category before mysteriously being taken down by @Apple. We had no warning.”
He also wrote in the same tweet that they had not been given any warning and that there has not been any explanation.
The tweet concludes thus:
“We don’t know why [Apple Removed it]…They took down our podcast, but they can’t take down Bitcoin!”
The podcast’s popularity ostensibly rose following an episode in which Pompliano interviews Murad Mahmudov, often described as the “highest conviction Bitcoin Maximalists in the world.”
The episode aired last week, only to be taken down by the California-based tech giant, Pompliano said.
Accordingly, the said episode that is suspected to have triggered Apple’s action focused its heated discussion on elemental features of the leading digital asset, including such areas as What is Bitcoin and how it works as well as the importance of its economic model.
It also touched on hot topics that included “why all Fiat Currencies are doomed to fail,” and “how central banks and institutions should be thinking about Bitcoin.”
‘Not currently available.’
A quick search for “Off the Chain” in Apple’s iTunes store returns an alert that simply states that the requested item is “not currently available.” It has since been restored.
Though apparently not available, Pompliano revealed a screenshot of the U.S iTunes store showing ‘Off the Chain’ in 4th spot.
Pomp, as many within the crypto circles know him, went further by providing another screenshot that shows the podcast was also ranked 14th in the store’s general “business” category.
Following the strange incident, Pompliano has expressed his hope that the podcast’s removal is just another case of coincidence, though he added that the podcast’s team hasn’t heard from Apple despite contacting them many times over the course of 5 days via email.
The Twitter community has weighed in with various commenting that indeed that searches for the podcast show that it is unavailable. However, the podcast is available on other podcasting platforms, including Google Play, Spotify, and Stitcher.
It could be a deliberate block, though Apple is the most authoritative voice that can confirm and explain these allegations.
Podcast restored by Apple
About 24-hours ago, Apple’s iTunes restored the popular podcast. No explanation was provided by either iTunes or Pompliano.
